Q: How Much Should a Video Security System Cost?
Answer: The costs can vary greatly, depending on many factors. Generally we can say, however, that a low end four camera system linked to a digital recorder and monitor typically can be delivered and installed for a cost between $1,500 and $2,000 plus tax. This same installation supplied with high end, high resolution, and multi-featured equipment can easily triple the above listed amount.
The factor that should carry the most weight in determining what kind of system (and therefore the costs) are the requirements and needs of the client. An expensive system that is over featured and over qualified for the client's needs is simply throwing away money. Conversely, a low-end system that fails to address the minimum requirements of a customer is a total waste of funds.
Q: Can I Legally Record Video and Audio in my Home or Business? What About Hidden Cameras?
Answer: Presently in the state of Ohio, a person who is the rightful owner of a business or home has the right to view and record non-sensitive video images. (This excludes showers, restrooms, locker rooms, etc.) NOTE! Landlords should use extreme caution concerning camera installation on rentals. AUDIO RECORDINGS are governed by federal and state statutes and restrictions do apply. For details contact the appropriate legal authority for your location.
Hidden cameras generally follow the same guidelines as above. Many jurisdictions however, are contemplating enacting restrictions to who and how a covert camera can be legally installed.
Q: Can I Monitor and Record my Business From a Remote Building or Location?
Answer: Yes, newly developed digital recording and internet based I.P. (internet protocol) camera systems provide for video imaging transmission over the internet via DSL / Cable systems (at high speeds) or over standard telephone lines (at MUCH slower speeds).
Q: Can a Newly Acquired Video Security System be Integrated into my Existing Burglar / Entry Alarm System?
Answer: Generally Yes. Most video systems are compatible with existing alarm systems. NOTE! Although most newer digital recorders also have "motion detection" and "e-mail alert" capabilities, it is not recommended that a location rely solely on a video system for entry / alarm requirements.
Q: Can I Install the System Myself and Save Money?
Answer: If your needs are such that a relatively simple system will be adequate AND you are a "handy man" or "handy woman" type, you may be able to "do it yourself." Remember however, that part of the cost of professionally installed video systems is having the correct and appropriate cameras / recorder and monitors selected for you, by the professional for your unique situation. Also, if you install it, and it doesn't work properly, guess who must troubleshoot it, or absorb the loss.
